When is Certification Required?

Asbestos abatement projects are regulated under the federal National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants, or NESHAP. In addition, state regulations stipulate work practice requirements for asbestos abatement projects.

Companies that do asbestos abatement work are required to become certified by the Division for Air Quality if they:

  • Perform any renovation- or demolition-related removals of Regulated Asbestos Containing Materials (RACM) in the amounts of at least 160 square, 260 linear, or 35 cubic feet over the course of one year’s time.
  • Perform any renovation or demolition activity at a facility located in Jefferson County, even if the asbestos material is nonfriable.

Note: Certified companies must ensure that any individuals performing asbestos abatement obtain individual accreditation through the Division for Air Quality.

How to Become a Certified Company

  • Submit DEP-7034 Application for Asbestos Certification to the Division for Air Quality.
  • Have at least one supervisor attend a Division for Air Quality Asbestos Orientation course. This one-hour course is held monthly at the Division in Frankfort and explains Kentucky's asbestos regulations.
  • Perform a compliance demonstration to show competency in setting up an abatement job.

Can I Apply Online?

Yes! Online asbestos form submittals can be made at the eForms website. Please note that the website works best in Chrome or Firefox.

Online Asbestos Abatement Orientation

The option to attend the Division for Air Quality’s Asbestos Abatement Orientation online is now available. To register, please email email Emma Moreo. Include in the email a copy of your most recent EPA Supervisor training certificate. Please note that the online orientation instructions will only be sent to an individual’s email address and not a company wide email address.

What Is a Compliance Demonstration?

To demonstrate competence in proper asbestos abatement procedures, you will be required to construct a free standing, six-stage decontamination unit.  This unit can be constructed outdoors in the parking lot of one of the Division's regional offices or on site of an upcoming abatement.

Companies must provide their own equipment for the compliance demonstration. Please contact your regional office to schedule your compliance demonstration.
