Urban Forestry and Community Programs

​​​​​​​​​The Kentucky Division of Forestry, in cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service (USFS), announces the Urban and Community Forestry (U&CF) Grant Assistance Program. The program is designed to encourage communities to create and support long-term and sustained urban and community forestry programs throughout Kentucky.   

The Kentucky Division of Forestry will launch its Kentucky Urban and Community Forestry Assistance Grant in February 9 – April 5​​, 2024​ $1.8 million will be available to local governments, 501(c)3 non-profit organizations, and educational institutions to support work increasing access to trees and green spaces, and the many benefits they provide.

​Funded through the US Forest Service from the Inflation Reduction Act, 100% of funding is intended to be delivered to or used to serve underserved and disadvantaged communities. Communities and organizations are encouraged to apply for between $1,000 and $250,000. Larger proposals will be considered. Consideration will be given to ensure smaller communities have equitable access to funding. ​Information regarding underserved area can be found by using the Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool ​.  No match funding will be required.

​Eligible projects include, but are not limited to:

  • Support local government and nonprofit support

  • Urban tree canopy assessments

  • Tree inventories

  • Tree board or tree commission development

  • Public tree ordinance/policy

  • Urban heat island analysis and extreme heat mitigation

  • Tree planting

  • Urban forestry workforce development

  • Community forestry focused education

  • Storm readiness, response and recovery program development

  • Pilot urban wood utilization programs

  • Demonstration community gravel beds

  • Tree planting and open space master plans

  • Greenway development planning

  • And more!

Ineligible projects include, but are not limited to:

  • Research

  • Property acquisition and related costs

  • Construction and capital improvement projects

  • Equipment purchases

  • Food or beverage purchases

  • Gift cards

  • Sub-granting of awarded funds

    Assistance in developing proposals will be available to all potential applicants from the Kentucky Division of Forestry. We will also provide guidance as to a project's suitability under this grant program. Applicants are strongly encouraged to discuss potential projects with the Division of Forestry before proposal submittal. Contact information is listed below to reach out with any questions.
