Assessing Environmental Health

The Division of Environmental Program Support (DEPS) provides centralized laboratory testing for the Department for Environmental Protection.  DEPS supports many of the department's programs, including:

  • Underground storage tanks
  • Groundwater monitoring
  • Superfund sites
  • Permits and compliance
  • Enforcement
  • Air toxics
  • Monitoring of rivers, lakes and streams

The nature and extent of pollutants are determined from analyzing samples from air, drinking water, ambient water, wastewater, sediments and soils, fish, chemicals and wastes. These samples are tested to measure levels of minerals, metals, nutrients, pesticides, herbicides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and other priority pollutants.
