The Nonpoint Source and Basin Team with the Division of Water has educational equipment that may be checked out by an individual, school or organization. This equipment is used to demonstrate how pollutants affect our water sources and the measures that we can take to prevent water pollution.

The Nonpoint Source and Basin Team also has display boards that may be checked out for an environmental education event. The program's mascot, Ollie the Otter, may also be checked out for an event.

Please look at the available equipment for a brief description and photo of the item. Once you find the item that you want to check out, send a request by clicking the "Request Equipment Checkout" link. Send any questions to Joann.Palmer@ky.gov.

Enviroscapes

Watershed / Nonpoint Source Enviroscape
We all live downstream and this educational tool demonstrates how water pollution comes from many sources. By using food coloring to represent chemicals, cocoa for top soil run off, water and cocoa that represents oil and chocolate sprinkles to demonstrate animal waste, this becomes a great visual tool to show how storm water pollution works.

Landfill Enviroscape

This visual tool demonstrates how waste management is designed to protect our water, air and land using the “reduce, reuse and recycle” method.

Wetlands Enviroscape

This tool is designed to demonstrate how a wetland can reduce flooding and erosion. Wetlands also provide habitat for birds and other animals. By using cocoa and other drink mixtures you can visually show how pollutants can be contained in a wetland, therefore protecting other water sources.

Hazardous Waste Enviroscape

A great visual tool that will demonstrate what happens when hazardous materials are improperly discharged or accidently spilled. Buy using food coloring, cocoa and drink mixes it demonstrates what happens when fuel or other hazardous materials get into our water system.

 Stream Table (aka River Lab)

The Stream Table demonstrates bank erosion caused by the natural flow of a stream. You then place trees and rocks to show how you can help prevent bank erosion. Preventing soil erosion on the banks also creates areas for fish and other habitat.

Check out the two stream table demonstration videos listed below to learn more about how to use a stream table:
